I’ve recently received a couple of strange emails. Initially I thought that they had simply been sent to the wrong email address, mistaking me for someone else. But then, as I read them a bit more carefully, I got the sense that they were simply too vague, that there was something wrong with them. Is it a new form of phishing or attempting to get responders to provide valid email addresses? I received two of the emails eight minutes apart. They actually use my real name in one of the emails, though this could have been determined by the same means my email was harvested. The rest of the post is after the break…
After the break you can read the text of an email that was sent out to Clinton Lowe and the attendees of our first Athens GGDA/IGDA meeting. Overall the event was very successful. I think we came away with a core group of people interested in making the chapter a success. I think the chapter itself will also be an excellent starting point for independent game development efforts in the Athens area. GameJam time!
I’ve been meaning to post these for a while, but we only recently got DSL up and running at the new place, so it has been difficult to get these posted somewhere. The full album can be seen here. We’ve posted some photos of the new house. Now keep in mind that this is pre-cleaning spree that we have been doing over the last couple of weeks. The house was a “short sale” which meant that it was nearly in foreclosure. That left little incentive for any work to be done on the place. See that big bush on the left in front? It’s actually 4 bushes.
The Inaugural Meeting of the Athens Chapter of Georgia Game Developers Association (which I’m hoping will be co-branded as an IGDA chapter as well) will be today, November 11th, at the Pub at Gameday. The full annoucement of the event can be found on the GGDA website. The synopsis listed on the site is:
The launch meeting of the GGDA Athens Chapter will focus on letting interested members of the Athens community know about these efforts and the role that the GGDA and IGDA plays in assisting the efforts of members. Dr. Casey O’Donnell of the University of Georgia and President of the Athens Chapter will be updating attendees of his and UGA’s gaming related efforts as well as discussing what he hopes will be a new pocket of game development and innovation. It is also an opportunity to gauge interest in participation in the Global Game Jam events on January 30th
I will post photos and event notes here after the meeting. The slides have been posted as a SWF file here.
Perhaps I’ve simply listened to too much Sting as of late. But my meditation has, as it often has of late, settled on the game, the geometry of chance.
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that’s not the shape of my heart
Ah, gotta love it when you get coverage on places other than where you write about yourself. I sent this link out to family, which was nice, because it gave them a sense of both what I’m up to, as well as how the university thinks about how I fit into the department.
I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately, despite the plethora of random crap that has shown up on the iTunes App Store, the ability to go to one place and search for applications has a certain appeal. It got me to thinking more generally about the App Store and digital distribution more generally. Between WiiWare, Xbox Live Arcade, the Playstation Store, GameTap, and Steam (which unfortunately does not support the Mac), there are a plethora of ways to get games onto your PC, console, iPod, or iPhone. .. One of the most arduous tasks in moving in the US invariably seems to be broadband setup. Ever since my first experience with US West/Qwest in Des Moines back in 1998 setting up DSL, it is a process I dread. One would that in a decade things had improved. My two experiences in Troy, NY were mostly positive. The first time setting up a cable modem wasn’t bad, but required more than a week of waiting and eventually the price of service rose so high that I dropped it in favor of Dry Loop (no phone service) DSL from Verizon, which again, aside from a roughly week long lag time in setup served us very well, and at a lower price point.
I hoped that my experience here in Athens might at least match those of Troy, but I was sorely mistaken. Continue reading »

I love my iPhone 3G. Sure, I’ve got some gripes about Apple policies and the current state of the iPhone SDK, iPhone OS, and iPhone NDA, but it probably one of the most single useful gadgets I’ve ever owned. The only real downside to it is that I feel like I’ve got it plugged into my Mac ALL THE TIME. Not because I’m an iTunes junkie mind you, but because it was always running out of battery power. Now, just for the record, before my iPhone I was using a Motorola RAZR V3, which doesn’t have great battery life, but nor is it a total slacker.
So I started trying to determine what was eating up so much battery. Continue reading »
